Kobe Steel Opens 40MW Compressor Test Facility

At its Takasago Works facility in Western Japan, Kobe Steel has opened a testing facility for non-standard, large capacity compressors with variable speed motors of up to 40 MW. Construction on the JPYÂ¥8 billion (US$73.5 million) facility began in February of 2015.
Demand for large-capacity, non-standard compressors has been growing — as have motor outputs, which are commonly 30 to 40 MW and mainly centrifugal compressors. These compressors are used in steelworks, power plants, petroleum refining and chemical plants.
Kobe Steel needed a test facility to conduct performance tests at the final stage of its 40 MW class compressors. Their existing test facility could only accommodate up to 20 MW.
